La increíble historia del Titanic

RMS Titanic was a passenger ship that sank in the North Atlantic Ocean on 15 April 1912 after scraping against an iceberg during her maiden voyage from Southampton, England to New York City.

The sinking of Titanic caused the deaths of 1,514 people in one of the deadliest (peacetime) maritime disasters in history. She was the largest ship at the time of her maiden voyage.

One of three Olympic class ocean ships owned by The White Star Company, she was built between 1909–11 by the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast, Ireland. She carried 2,223 people.

Her passengers included some of the wealthiest people in the world, as well as over a thousand emigrants from Great Britain, Ireland, Scandinavia and elsewhere, seeking a new life in North America.
The ship was designed to be the very comfortable and luxurious, with a gym, swimming pool, libraries, high-class restaurants and beautiful cabins. A first class ticket was $4,700.

She also had a powerful wireless telegraph which the passengers could use. Even though she had safety features such as watertight compartments and watertight doors, she did not have enough life boats for all people. She only had enough lifeboats for 1,178 people – half of the number travelling.

After leaving Southampton on 10 April 1912, Titanic headed to Ireland then west to New York. On 14 April 1912, four days into the trip and about 375 miles (600 km) south of Newfoundland Canada, she hit an iceberg at 11:40 pm (ship's time; GMT−3).

The collision caused Titanic's hull plates to bend inwards on her starboard side which opened five of her sixteen watertight compartments to the sea.
400 tonnes of water was coming in every minute. Over the next two and a half hours, the ship gradually filled with water and sank. Passengers and some crew members were put in lifeboats, many were sent out half full.

Most men were left aboard due to the "women and children first" policy at the time. At 2:20 am Titanic split in half and sank bow-first with over a thousand people still on board.

The band decided to continue playing until they and the ship sank. None survived. Those in the water died within minutes because the sea was less than minus 1 C. The 710 survivors were taken from lifeboats by RMS Carpathia a few hours later.

The disaster caused world shock. Public investigations in Britain and the United States led to improvements in maritime safety. Many of the survivors lost all of their money and possessions; many families lost their main bread-winner.

Some of the male survivors, especially the White Star Line's chairman, J. Bruce Ismay, were accused of cowardice for leaving the ship while people were still on board, after they got home people were ashamed of their behaviour.

The wreck of Titanic remains on the seabed, gradually disintegrating at a depth of 12,415 feet (3,784 m). Since its rediscovery in 1986, thousands of artefacts have been recovered from the sea bed and put in museums around the world.

Titanic has become one of the most famous ships in history, her memory kept alive by many books, songs, films, exhibitions and memorials.
